Canada and 11 European nations have revealed plans to enforce trade restrictions on products originating from Israeli settlements located in the occupied West Bank.
Through a joint declaration, the foreign ministers representing Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Britain cautioned that conditions within the West Bank are worsening swiftly. They highlighted severe levels of settler violence and expansion, stating that actions by Israel threaten the feasibility of a two-state solution.
The declaration urged Israel to immediately halt settlement growth and guarantee accountability for settler violence, confirming the coalition's goal to penalize trade involving goods from settlements, which are deemed illegal under international law.
Britain declared a prohibition on importing settlement items alongside maximum legal sanctions directed at the settlements and associated individuals, following a steep rise in friction with Tel Aviv that prompted Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to advocate for the removal of the British ambassador. France likewise declared plans to prohibit settlement goods.
Addressing the House of Commons in London, British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband detailed a series of actions against the settlements, stating that his administration recognizes ethnic cleansing of Palestinians occurring in certain areas of the West Bank—a matter often ignored by the Israeli government.
These actions unfold amid ongoing settlement expansion, most notably a tender to construct roughly 1,200 units within the critical “E1” zone situated east of Jerusalem, a development London cautioned endangers the prospect of an unbroken Palestinian state.
