Security forces in Cameroon are actively searching for attackers responsible for killing a police officer and kidnapping five teachers during a violent raid on a teacher training centre located in the country’s Northwest Region, according to local authorities.

Adolphe Lele Lafrique, the regional governor, informed the AFP news agency on Wednesday that a group of armed individuals 'infiltrated' the teacher training centre in the town of Wum—situated approximately 80 kilometres, or 50 miles, north of Bamenda city—on Tuesday morning. A police officer stationed at the scene attempted to intervene and halt the attackers.

'The armed individuals unleashed a hail of bullets on him, killing him instantly, and took five teachers with them to an unknown location,' Lafrique stated.

The Northwest Region is one of two English-speaking regions in Cameroon where separatist groups have been engaged in conflict with government forces for approximately 10 years. According to local reports, separatist leaders across the Northwest and Southwest Regions previously announced a lockdown intended to disrupt the school year.

Tensions regarding the francophone grip on education intensified in late 2016, when the government violently suppressed protests in the anglophone regions. Teachers and lawyers had been strongly objecting to the growing influence of francophone authorities over the education and legal systems within the two English-speaking regions, which account for 20 percent of Cameroon’s population.

Following the crackdown, a full-scale conflict erupted in 2017 between separatists and the government in Yaounde, leaving civilians vulnerable to extortion, kidnappings for ransom, and widespread violence. According to the United Nations, at least 6,000 individuals have lost their lives since the violence began in 2016.

Furthermore, more than 330,000 people were internally displaced within Cameroon last year, while approximately 100,000 others fled across the border to neighboring Nigeria.
