Fighting has escalated sharply across Yemen, with the internationally recognised government reporting that Houthi artillery attacks have killed three children, while Saudi Arabia accuses the Iran-backed group of continuing to target vital kingdom infrastructure. These developments follow warnings of impending attacks across several Saudi provinces early Thursday, as the Houthis vowed retaliation after alleging that Riyadh launched 54 airstrikes over a 12-hour period.
The renewed hostilities between the Houthis and Saudi-backed government forces coincide with heightened regional tensions driven by the United States and Israel’s war on Iran. Pakistan issued warnings on Tuesday that ongoing Houthi strikes could activate the recently signed Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, a mutual security pact uniting Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan. Meanwhile, Iran has dismissed Arab League criticism regarding alleged interference in Yemen, asserting that the Houthis operate independently.
According to the World Health Organization, the ongoing clashes have resulted in over 1,000 casualties and displaced tens of thousands of people since August 24. Government-run Saba news reported that recent Houthi shelling in the central Marib governorate claimed the lives of three children, including an infant, and wounded six others.
Conflict has gripped Yemen since 2014 when the Houthis captured Sanaa, triggering a 2015 Saudi-led military intervention that caused widespread devastation and an estimated 150,000 deaths. Although a United Nations-brokered truce in 2022 halted large-scale hostilities, fighting resumed in July following an attack on the Houthi-held Sanaa airport. Recent offensives by the Houthis in Hodeidah and Taiz aim to reach the Bab el-Mandeb strait, prompting government-aligned counterattacks in al-Jawf and other regions.
The violence has increasingly spilled into Saudi Arabia. A spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, Major General Turki al-Maliki, stated that the Houthis continue targeting assets and infrastructure in Khamis Mushait, Abha, and Jazan using ballistic missiles and drones, prompting the coalition to vow a firm response. The Saudi Civil Defense authority issued multiple alerts for Khamis Mushait and Abha, responding to Houthi pledges of retaliation against Saudi airstrikes involving aircraft from King Khalid Air Base and King Fahd Air Base.
Regionally, Yemeni government-aligned forces reported continued advances in al-Jawf and Taiz, while Pakistani officials reaffirmed that any unprovoked aggression or spillover into Saudi Arabia could operationalize the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement. In response to Arab League condemnations, Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected accusations of interference and emphasized its support for Yemen's unity and territorial integrity.
