Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Investment Company has announced a significant minority investment in Chinese coffee chain Luckin Coffee, partnering with controlling shareholder Centurium Capital in a transaction valued at approximately $1 billion. While the specific financial breakdown, stake size, and valuation were not disclosed, the move underscores Mubadala's growing confidence in China's booming consumer sector amid rising demand for freshly brewed coffee.

The agreement remains subject to customary closing conditions. Mohamed Albadr, head of Asia, Private Equity at Mubadala, highlighted the long-term potential in the region, praising Luckin Coffee's technology-driven retail model that leverages digital customer engagement and rapid product development. Building on a longstanding partnership with Centurium Capital, Mubadala aims to support Luckin Coffee's expansion both domestically and internationally.

According to Grand View Research, China's coffee market is projected to reach $5.36 billion by 2033, growing at a compound annual rate of 6.4 per cent from 2026 to 2033. Michael Chen, partner at Centurium Capital, noted that Mubadala's global perspective and network will further fuel the coffee chain's innovation and growth.

Founded in 2017 and based in Xiamen, Luckin Coffee operates a massive global network exceeding 36,000 stores with nearly 500 million cumulative transacting customers as of June 30. Alongside its dominant domestic presence, the company has ventured into international markets such as Singapore, Malaysia, and the US.

For Mubadala, the transaction expands its extensive $385 billion portfolio across Asia. Since entering China in 2015, the Abu Dhabi investor has steadily evolved its strategy from the China-UAE Co-operation Fund to executing direct investments, with China now anchoring its broader Asian investment framework alongside sectors like advanced manufacturing and healthcare.
