Nearly 200 individuals have been arrested as part of a targeted police operation addressing prolific thieves utilizing e-bikes and mopeds to execute snatch robberies across London’s streets. The city's safety reputation has faced challenges due to the increase in "e-bike bandits" who approach victims to steal phones or watches before escaping through urban thoroughfares.

An operation concentrated in the Westminster hotspot yielded 157 vehicle seizures and 187 arrests, encompassing charges for possession of dangerous weapons, drug-related offenses, and robbery and theft. The initiative targeted offenders known to law enforcement or connected to previous incidents, featuring the apprehension of a knife-carrying 17-year-old boy linked to a morning phone theft and a 22-year-old man wanted for robbery who struck an officer while fleeing on an illegal e-bike.

During searches, officers recovered stolen mobile phones wrapped in tin foil to block tracking signals. Utilizing tracking data and expanded fleets of high-powered Sur-Ron e-bikes—increased from five to 25 by the Metropolitan Police—officers pursued suspects through congested areas. Consequently, e-bike-related crime dropped by 22 percent between February and July in regions like Lambeth, Southwark, Waterloo, and London Bridge.

Authorities have previously committed to deploying facial recognition technology and increasing personnel to combat violent street robberies. The West End shopping districts, including Oxford Street, Regent Street, Mayfair, and Knightsbridge, have drawn notoriety for high-end thefts, earning the moniker "Rolex Rippers" due to luxury watch losses.

“Through targeted operations like this, we are staying one step ahead of the criminals who use high-powered bikes or mopeds to steal from Londoners,” stated Det Supt Gareth Gilbert, leader of the operation. Alongside these measures, enforcement against illegal and modified e-bikes has led to over 2,500 e-bikes and e-scooters seized this year, contributing to broader reductions in personal theft, mobile phone thefts, and overall robberies across London.
