The United Arab Emirates has expressed hope that the decision by the Algerian government to cut all diplomatic ties will be short-lived. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released an official statement following Algeria's announcement that it was severing relations and requesting the Emirati ambassador to depart Algiers.
Bilateral relations have experienced strain in recent years as both nations adopted contrasting stances on various regional issues. Despite the diplomatic freeze, the UAE emphasized that current developments will not affect the Algerian community residing in the Emirates or citizens visiting the country.
"In light of the decision by the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to sever relations with the United Arab Emirates, the UAE reaffirms the importance it attaches to its relations with all countries and its commitment to developing and strengthening them to serve shared interests and promote understanding, cooperation and prosperity," the ministry stated.
The statement continued, "The UAE expresses hope that this decision will be temporary, in a manner that preserves the fraternal ties between the two brotherly peoples." The ministry further highlighted its appreciation for the Algerian people, noting the strong bonds uniting both nations through residents and visitors, and its ongoing commitment to preserving these shared interests.
