The decision by the UK to prohibit imports originating from illegal Israeli settlements and to apply sanctions against entities involved in their construction has intensified pressure on the administration of Benjamin Netanyahu, particularly as the occupied West Bank experiences unprecedented land confiscations.

More than two years have passed since the International Court of Justice delivered its advisory opinion mandating that all nations refrain from recognizing Israel's long-standing occupation. Furthermore, the court instructed Israel to halt the establishment of settlements, which violate international law.

Israel initiated its settlement initiative following the occupation of Palestinian territory in 1967, and expansion has persisted under successive administrations, accelerating significantly following October 7, 2023. A particular project, however, has raised significant concerns: the Israeli government's issuance of a tender for 1,200 housing units designated for the E1 settlement. Such development threatens to divide the West Bank in two, rendering the establishment of a viable Palestinian state impossible.

In a recent episode of Beyond the Headlines, host Nada AlTaher engaged with Mairav Zonszein, a senior analyst specializing in Israel at the International Crisis Group, to examine the potential impact of these UK-led measures on the ground and whether they will influence Israeli policy.
