Recent disruptions to global supply chains served as a primary driver behind the UAE's monumental decision to commit €40 billion ($46.47 billion) in investments to Germany, according to Dr Thani Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Foreign Trade. The substantial investment was officially announced on Thursday evening during the state visit of President Sheikh Mohamed to Germany.

The financial backing will span multiple critical sectors, including industry, advanced technology, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, and energy, with a specific allocation of €10 billion designated for Bavaria. Dr Al Zeyoudi emphasized the highly strategic nature of the alliance between the UAE and Germany, describing them as two complementary nations capable of propelling each other forward.

“What has been happening around the world in recent years, and particularly in recent months, has disrupted supply chains, energy supplies and technological advancement,” said Dr Al Zeyoudi. He noted that commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz has faced repeated disruptions since the outbreak of the Iran war in late February, creating repercussions extending far beyond the GCC. Consequently, strengthening international partnerships with key European economic players like Germany has become critical for the UAE.

While some initiatives will take time to materialize, Dr Al Zeyoudi confirmed that certain projects are already nearing implementation, with immediate visible impacts expected in energy, technology, and logistics.

Under the framework of mutual benefits, Germany will leverage the UAE's status as a global logistics and trade hub, along with its capital and market reach into the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. In return, the UAE will acquire German industrial knowledge and advanced technology. The newly established UAE-Germany Investment Council will oversee the agreements, ensuring that major projects transition smoothly from announcements to active implementation.
