Saudi Arabia has temporarily shut down its vital East-West oil pipeline following a drone attack, severely disrupting global energy supplies already strained by ongoing regional conflicts. Satellite imagery confirmed damage to the 1,200km (746-mile) infrastructure in the Hejaz region, halting the flow of millions of barrels of oil per day.

According to the office of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, the drones were launched from the southeastern Iraqi province of Maysan. No group has officially claimed responsibility for the strikes, though security analysts suggest the operation was likely ordered by Tehran to support Houthi objectives in Yemen and enforce a broader blockade.

In response to the incident, the Iraqi government condemned the attack, dismissed the commander of the Maysan operations command, and closed the Shalamcheh border crossing with Iran as a precaution. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy confirmed the precautionary shutdown as specialized teams assess the safety of the pipeline.

The closure removes a crucial bypass option for Saudi oil exports, which were already restricted by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. With Brent crude surpassing $104 per barrel and US diesel hitting record highs, energy experts warn that the pipeline outage threatens to cause severe economic fallout for the global market.
