The United Arab Emirates on Saturday pressed the UN Security Council to expand its arms embargo to cover all of Sudan and target every party involved in the conflict, following the council's decision to approve a one-month extension of the current sanctions regime.

“Such a measure would help stem the flow of weapons to the belligerents, protect civilians, and support efforts to end the conflict,” the nation stated. Highlighting that Sudan is experiencing one of the worst humanitarian crises globally, the statement emphasized the urgent need for international intervention to force both warring factions and their allied militias to halt hostilities and guarantee safe, rapid, and unhindered humanitarian access.

The UN Security Council unanimously passed a US-drafted resolution on Friday that extends sanctions on Sudan until October 9, giving members a brief window to negotiate a broader arms embargo. US senior adviser Massad Boulos stated that Washington backed the short-term extension after consultations with allies, but stressed that maintaining the existing status quo for another year was completely unacceptable.

Meanwhile, Russia’s UN Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya informed Council members on Friday that Moscow would oppose any expansion of the sanctions, maintaining that the resolution must remain strictly limited to a technical rollover.

As fighting escalates in Darfur, Kordofan, and Blue Nile alongside the deployment of drones and advanced weaponry, concerns regarding foreign military support continue to grow. Concluding its statement, the UAE reiterated that there is no military solution for Sudan and that lasting peace requires an independent, civilian-led transition free from the influence of warring factions and extremist groups.
