Saudi Civil Defence reported that two individuals sustained injuries, while a mosque and several buildings suffered damage following a projectile attack launched by the Yemeni Houthi rebels into Saudi Arabia’s southern Jazan region.
The projectile impacted al-Tuwal governorate on Saturday, resulting in damage to multiple vehicles as well. A civil defence spokesperson denounced the strike on civilian objects as a “flagrant violation of international humanitarian law” and confirmed that standard emergency procedures were promptly enacted.
Meanwhile, the Houthis asserted that their operation targeted a Saudi military base located in Sharurah, within the southern Najran province. Subsequently, Saudi Civil Defence announced that the threat had dissipated in the Khamis Mushait governorate following an earlier warning issued to local residents.
In recent days, the Iran-backed Houthis have intensified missile and drone attacks directed at southern Saudi Arabia. On Tuesday, the group targeted civilian and economic infrastructure across the Saudi cities of Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran, leaving 73 people wounded, including women and children.
These strikes reflect a sharp escalation in Yemen’s prolonged conflict, which flared up again in July after approximately four years of relative calm sustained by a United Nations-brokered truce. Houthi fighters have established control over Yemen’s entire Red Sea coast and seized the strategic port city of Mocha, while Yemeni government forces have advanced by opening new fronts in al-Jawf, Marib, and al-Bayda.
Data from the International Organization for Migration and local officials indicate that the renewed fighting has claimed more than 500 lives and displaced tens of thousands of people.
Addressing the deteriorating situation, the UN Security Council convened an emergency session this month after Special Envoy Hans Grundberg cautioned that Yemen is confronting “a new and more dangerous phase of war”.
