Relatives of passengers aboard the Virgo Transport 8 ferry anxiously wait for updates as a search and rescue agency officer records information on a whiteboard in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, Indonesia, on September 13, 2026.
Tragedy struck as one person died and 102 individuals were successfully evacuated from an Indonesian passenger ferry that lost communication in the Java Sea during a severe storm, local officials confirmed.
The Virgo Transport 8 was carrying a total of 243 people when it dropped out of contact with its operator during the early hours of Sunday, according to reports from Indonesia's search and rescue agency. The vessel had originally departed from Surabaya on the Indonesian island of Java on Saturday, charting a course toward Banjarmasin, a major port city situated on Borneo.
Emergency response teams and rescuers are actively scouring the waters in a frantic search for the remaining passengers and crew members still unaccounted for.
According to I Putu Sudayana, the head of the local search and rescue office in Banjarmasin, the ship encountered treacherous weather conditions. The AFP news agency reported that the ferry's final known coordinates placed it in the Java Sea, roughly 81 nautical miles, or 150 kilometers, away from Banjarmasin.
Rescue ships along with a specialized helicopter have been deployed to comb the area. Sudayana noted that towering waves reaching heights of up to 2.5 meters, or 8.2 feet, have significantly impeded rescue efforts.
“It is extremely risky for vessels. Even our Basarnas vessel, which is 40 metres [131 feet] long, is at great risk,” Sudayana stated to reporters, referencing the official national search and rescue agency.
Maritime incidents have plagued the region recently. Last month, a devastating fire broke out on a ferry traveling between Bali and Lombok, resulting in one fatality and leaving five people missing. Earlier, in July, another ferry carrying a load of more than 70 people sank near Selayar Island, located south of Sulawesi.
