Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem emphasized that Egypt's furniture sector is a longstanding industry boasting a rich history, an internationally recognized reputation, and strong competitive advantages poised for unprecedented growth. However, he noted that the sector has yet to achieve its full potential relative to its actual capabilities.
During an expanded meeting held on Saturday with furniture manufacturers, designers, and production input producers, the minister highlighted the necessity of creating a distinct identity for Egyptian furniture. He also stressed the importance of strengthening connections between designers and manufacturers, noting that design adds significant value, and emphasized the need to develop skilled artisans to maintain consistent quality and competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.
The gathering was attended by Assistant Minister for Industrial Policies Maha Saleh, Federation of Egyptian Industries Deputy Chairman Mahmoud Serag, and Federation of Egyptian Industries Executive Director Khaled Abdel Azim. The session aimed to gather stakeholder insights, identify sector challenges, and discuss strategies to enhance domestic and international competitiveness.
Hashem stated that the ministry utilizes a collaborative approach centered on direct partnership and field engagement with experts and stakeholders to translate real-world experiences into actionable plans. The ministry's current strategy focuses on keeping pace with global developments and significantly boosting Egyptian exports through targeted factory visits and performance assessments.
Key development areas reviewed during the meeting included deepening local manufacturing, replacing imports in major projects, and activating digital platforms for marketing. Participants also explored expanding into new export markets—particularly in African markets, Libya, and Iraq—while addressing customs and logistical hurdles.
Additionally, the discussions covered a comprehensive support program for small and medium-sized workshops through specialized training and governance mechanisms, as well as a feasibility study for establishing integrated industrial zones for furniture manufacturing to lower logistical costs.
