Former Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad has urged Gulf states to use the upcoming meeting in Oman to establish a new framework for relations with Tehran, focusing on regional stability, economic cooperation, and resolving longstanding disputes.

Speaking ahead of the planned gathering, which Iran announced would bring together Iran, Iraq, and the Gulf states to discuss regional security and the Strait of Hormuz, Sheikh Hamad advocated for collective and direct engagement with Tehran. Having served as Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister from 1992 to 2013, he expressed hope that the Muscat discussions would address existing problems and establish a roadmap for future relations.

Sheikh Hamad emphasized the importance of long-term economic integration, renewing his proposal to transform the Gulf basin into an economic zone by removing customs duties on exports between Iran and GCC states. He warned against temporary solutions and stressed the necessity of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open to international navigation without imposing unauthorized fees.

Additionally, Sheikh Hamad called for Gulf solidarity regarding the Houthi movement in Yemen, stating that the security of Saudi Arabia is vital to all GCC members and urging the reactivation of the GCC Unified Military Command to protect Saudi borders.
