A 40-year-old woman in the state of Pennsylvania has died from measles, marking the third fatality in a rare outbreak of the preventable disease across the United States. Greg Furlong, the medical examiner for Jefferson County, announced the tragic news in an online statement, emphasizing that measles remains a severe and potentially life-threatening illness.

Health officials confirmed that the unnamed woman passed away on Saturday from measles-related complications. According to The Washington Post, citing Furlong, the patient was unvaccinated. County authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families against the highly contagious virus.

All three measles-related deaths in the US this year have occurred in Pennsylvania. The previous two fatalities were reported in August in Lancaster County, a rural agricultural region with a large Amish population and lower vaccination rates. State health authorities confirmed that those victims were also unvaccinated.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control shows 3,294 measles cases across more than 45 states so far in 2026, following 2,289 cases and three deaths reported in the country last year. The Pennsylvania Department of Health noted that the state has recorded 676 total cases this year, with 124 hospitalizations, nearly a third of which involved children. Lancaster County alone accounts for 295 of these cases.

Although measles was declared eliminated in the US in 2000, it has seen a resurgence linked by experts to rising vaccine scepticism. The outbreak has also sparked political friction, with President Donald Trump’s administration clashing with local health authorities. US Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F Kennedy Jr previously accused Pennsylvania officials of political weaponization, while Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro criticized Kennedy for spreading conspiracy theories and previously downplaying the severity of the disease.
