A regional meeting scheduled for Monday in the southern city of Salalah to discuss plans for a new maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz has been postponed, according to an announcement by Oman. Iran stated that the delay is a result of "events unfolding in Yemen."
Speaking at a news conference on Monday, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei explained that Oman and Iran "have taken a joint decision aimed at arriving at a responsible" method for managing the strait. Late on Sunday, Oman's Foreign Ministry confirmed the rescheduling of the talks, noting the move is designed "to help create appropriate conditions for constructive dialogue."
The ministry added that the postponement aims to set the stage for discussions that can yield lasting understandings supporting regional security and stability, aligning with shared hopes for cooperation and peace in the area.
Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi confirmed the delay on X, writing: "In the interests of consensus, the regional meeting set for tomorrow in Salalah has been postponed." He further stated, "We remain committed to fostering dialogue that supports stability and lasting cooperation in our region." Albusaidi's post featured the flags of Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, indicating the participants expected at the negotiations.
As of now, no new date has been scheduled, and neither official provided additional details regarding the postponement beyond Iran's mention of Yemen.
