A leading Israeli rights group has warned that the country is carrying out an "elimination project" in the occupied West Bank aimed at dismantling Palestinian life and forcibly transforming the territory into a permanently Jewish-Israeli region.
According to B’Tselem, one of the most recognized Israeli human rights organizations, state policy in the area has "entered a new phase" in recent years. The report states that violence, land grabs, movement restrictions, economic "strangulation", and social and political destruction have pushed Palestinian life in the region to the brink.
At a press conference in Jerusalem, Yuli Novak, B’Tselem’s executive director, noted in the report that this strategy has been "central to settler colonialist projects throughout history". This warning arrives amid an ongoing escalation of Israeli military and settler violence in the West Bank, with the government facing widespread accusations of fanning the flames of conflict.
The report's authors referenced comments from political leaders and military officials, including senior West Bank general Avi Bluth, who remarked earlier in the year that "we’re killing like we haven’t killed since 1967". Additionally, 12 of Israel's western allies—including the UK—announced sanctions against illegal settlements in the West Bank last week, drawing Israel into a diplomatic crisis.
Ms Novak called for increased international action, stating, "Governments cannot condemn these crimes while granting Israel the impunity to continue." She emphasized that international institutions must utilize every available legal means to halt the violence.
Entitled The Elimination Project, the report was released as Israel prepares for elections late next month at the conclusion of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s term. Ms Novak cautioned that a potential defeat of the far-right government would not alter Israel's approach, noting a consensus across the Israeli-Jewish political spectrum regarding control, Jewish supremacy, and actions in Gaza.
The findings draw on more than 2,000 testimonies gathered over the past three years. Among them is the account of 11-year-old Khaled Bani Odeh, who witnessed undercover Israeli forces kill his parents and siblings as they drove home from Nablus, as detailed by Kareem Jubran, B’Tselem field research director.
