Iran's top nuclear official, Mohammad Eslami, was barred from entering a UN meeting at the International Atomic Energy Agency's headquarters in Vienna on Monday following pressure from the US.

Mr Eslami, who heads Iran's nuclear energy organisation, was blocked due to his inclusion on a UN sanctions list. These measures had been lifted under a 2015 nuclear deal but were restored a year ago through a snapback mechanism. Austria's Foreign Ministry stated that an application for an exemption to the UN Security Council was rejected due to a lack of consensus, meaning entry could not be permitted under Austria's international obligations.

Preston Wells Griffith, the US ambassador to the IAEA, confirmed that the waiver was denied following urgent calls from the Trump administration. Mr Griffith stated that an Iranian official on the sanctions list could not travel until Tehran offered meaningful cooperation on nuclear issues, adding that participation would have allowed Iran to exploit IAEA proceedings for propaganda.

Iran strongly protested the decision. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei called the ban completely unjustified during a press conference on Monday, while Reza Najafi, Iran's IAEA ambassador, described it as politically motivated.

The incident occurs amid ongoing tensions and follows recent IAEA observations of construction activity at Pickaxe Mountain in Iran's Isfahan province.
