Representative Wesley Hunt has been selected by President Donald Trump to serve as the new US ambassador to Saudi Arabia, finally filling a diplomatic post that has remained vacant for months.
Expressing his gratitude, Mr Hunt described accepting the nomination as the "honour of a lifetime." In a post on X, he stated: "Having served in the region both in combat as an Army officer and for two years as a diplomatic liaison in the kingdom, I understand the strategic importance of the partnership between the United States and Saudi Arabia and the profound responsibility of this position."
The congressman assumed office in 2023 and later mounted an unsuccessful campaign for the Senate this year. Prior to his career in politics, he served in the US Army.
President Donald Trump formally submitted Mr Hunt's name on Monday as part of a broader batch of nominations sent to the Senate. The nomination now requires confirmation from both chambers of Congress.
Should he be confirmed, Mr Hunt will step into the role during a critical period, as the US seeks to reassure Saudi Arabia, one of its primary allies in the Middle East, amidst ongoing tensions tied to the Iran war. Throughout the conflict involving the US and Iran, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf allies have faced significant targeting. Recently, Riyadh exchanged strikes with Yemen's Houthi rebels following attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure.
This ambassadorial position is among several critical diplomatic postings across the Middle East that have stayed vacant since President Donald Trump returned to office. To date, the US has also yet to name ambassadors to the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, or Egypt.
