XRG, the international energy investment unit of Adnoc, has finalized its acquisition of a stake in the Southern Gas Corridor, marking a significant step in the Abu Dhabi-based company's expansion across the Caspian region. Following the receipt of all necessary regulatory approvals, XRG completed the equity purchase from Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Economy, though financial terms of the agreement—originally announced in November—were not disclosed.
Stretching approximately 3,500 kilometers, the Southern Gas Corridor comprises a vital network of pipelines and gasfields connecting the Caspian Sea's Azerbaijani sector through Georgia and Turkey into Southern Europe. XRG's portfolio now encompasses key assets such as the Shah Deniz natural gas-condensate field in Azerbaijan, the South Caucasus Pipeline, the Trans Anatolian Pipeline, the Trans Adriatic Pipeline, and shares in Azerbaijan Gas Supply Company.
With an annual delivery capacity of up to 26 billion cubic meters of natural gas, the corridor plays a pivotal role in supplying Southern Europe. The strategic value of the route has grown amid geopolitical disruptions, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz during the Iran war, which severely impacted Qatari gas supplies, and Europe's ongoing efforts to reduce reliance on Russian energy amid the Ukraine war.
“The completion represents a major milestone in XRG’s strategy to build an integrated and resilient gas position across the Caspian region,” the company stated, emphasizing its role in connecting Caspian resources with European and regional markets. Established in 2024 with an enterprise value surpassing $80 billion, XRG aims to double its asset value over the next decade by leveraging the energy transition, artificial intelligence, and emerging economies.
As part of its broader Caspian expansion, XRG holds a 30 percent interest in Azerbaijan's Absheron gas and condensate field and a 38 percent stake in Turkmenistan's offshore Block I gas and condensate concession site. Mohamed Al Aryani, President of International Gas at XRG, noted that the company is building a resilient platform to link advantaged supply with surging regional and European demand. Furthermore, XRG has extended its global reach to South America, recently securing a licence alongside BP and Qatar’s UCC to develop an offshore natural gas project in Venezuela.
