The leader of a far-right anti-migrant group in the UK claims he can mobilise thousands of supporters to protest at a proposed site designated to house small-boat migrants. Daniel Thomas, founder of the Patriot Platform, previously organised demonstrations in Portsmouth following the arrival of more than 140 asylum seekers on a single mega dinghy. His group was also behind a protest in Dover where masked demonstrators blocked roads while chanting “stop the boats,” catching police off guard.

Mr Thomas, also known as Danny Tommo, is an associate of far-right activist Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon. He has now shifted his focus to the village of Piddington in Oxfordshire, where local residents are opposing government plans to house 1,250 male asylum seekers at a former Ministry of Defence site. Speaking on Mr Robinson's YouTube channel, Mr Thomas asked how powerful it would be if 5,000 men surrounded the camp with tents to block access. He suggested the Patriot Platform would receive peaceful reinforcements from the north, Scotland, and Ireland.

In Piddington, a group of 133 women recently sent an open letter to every female Member of Parliament expressing safety concerns regarding the plans, and the village is holding a symbolic referendum on leaving the UK. Meanwhile, some Patriot Platform supporters are reportedly considering taking a vessel out to sea to confront migrant boats crossing to the UK, described as an early-stage idea.

Dr William Allchorn, a far-right expert from Anglia Ruskin University, noted that the high level of organisation and use of balaclavas by groups like the Patriot Platform and Raise the Colours gives them a paramilitary feel. He explained that these groups are acting as a militaristic flank for larger demonstrations, adding an intimidation factor.

Regarding government efforts, the UK has reported a nearly 45 per cent drop in Channel crossings this year compared to the same period in 2025, with 17,281 migrants making the journey. The National Crime Agency (NCA) and the Home Office cited law enforcement pressure on supply chains as a key factor in reducing arrival numbers, alongside French prevention efforts. However, people smugglers have responded by cramming up to 230 migrants onto a single boat to maintain profits. In response to organised crime, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced that the Home Office is recruiting 500 new officers as part of a £500 million crackdown to target criminal bosses and seize funds used for people smuggling.
