A delegation consisting of US officials and business leaders has arrived in Syria to strengthen Washington's economic connections with Damascus. Representing the US Chamber of Commerce, the group of over 80 participants—including delegates from 50 companies—conducted multiple ministerial meetings in Damascus on Monday, as reported by the Syrian state news agency Sana.
Throughout the discussions, the delegation emphasized the significance of investment and private-sector partnerships in improving bilateral ties. “We encourage US businesses to invest in the Syrian market, which offers significant opportunities,” stated Jake McGee, the US deputy assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labour, on Monday. He noted that Syria's requirements were considerable across numerous sectors, and that recent updates to investment procedures and laws had improved market accessibility for investors.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al Shaibani met with Mr McGee in Damascus to converse about broadening cooperation between both nations. According to the Syrian Foreign Ministry, the two officials also reviewed recent international and regional developments.
This visit succeeds the inaugural US-Syria Business Forum, which was arranged by the US-Syria Business Council and hosted in Damascus during July. That gathering united government officials, investors, and business leaders to investigate emerging market opportunities.
The US has progressively lifted sanctions on Syria since the previous year. Syrian President Ahmad Al Shara has urged global nations to invest in his nation to facilitate its reintegration into the global economy following 14 years of civil war. While speaking in Dubai on Tuesday, Mr Al Shara remarked that “Syria has transformed … from an exporter of Captagon and humans, and a source of conflict in the region, to a stable point.” He further noted to the Arab Media Summit, “People have been talking about it as a trade route, and a supply chain for energy between the East and West.”
