Saudi Arabia’s air defences successfully destroyed a Houthi drone south of Makkah before it could cross into prohibited airspace above the holy city, the Saudi-led military coalition in Yemen announced on Wednesday.
Coalition spokesman Maj Gen Turki Al Malki stated that the drone was intercepted at approximately 6:50pm local time on Tuesday. He characterized the incident as the second Houthi attempt to target Makkah, following a previous ballistic missile launch in July 2017.
While widely shared online footage appeared to depict a bright projectile illuminating the night sky near a mosque followed by a loud blast, the exact location could not be independently verified as Makkah.
Emphasizing that the security of Makkah, its visitors, and pilgrims is a strict red line, Maj Gen Al Malki warned that coalition forces will implement decisive measures against the Iran-backed Houthis to counter their hostile and terrorist behavior.
Meanwhile, the Houthis firmly denied any plans to target the holy city. Mohammed Al Farah, a member of the Houthi political bureau, dismissed allegations of targeting Makkah as an outright lie without factual basis, according to statements published by the Houthi-run Saba news agency.
Mr Al Farah accused Saudi Arabia of fabricating the claims to rally Muslims against Yemen and distract from the ongoing conflict, asserting that Yemenis hold a deeper commitment to protecting Islamic holy sites than those who exploit them for political gain.
These opposing statements emerge as the Houthi militia intensifies its assaults on Saudi Arabia following territorial gains along Yemen's western coastline. These movements have drawn Riyadh further into the regional conflict, particularly as the group secures positions near the Bab Al Mandeb strait and threatens maritime shipping.
Saudi Arabia continues to face heightened security challenges, including drone attacks on critical energy infrastructure such as the East-West oil pipeline, which links eastern oil fields to the Red Sea port of Yanbu.
