Saudi Arabia announced that it successfully shot down a Huthi drone on the outskirts of Mecca on Tuesday, drawing immediate and widespread regional condemnation against the Iran-backed Yemeni rebel group. According to Turki al-Maliki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led Coalition Forces, this marks the first time the Huthis have targeted the holy city in nearly a decade, following a 2017 ballistic missile interception.

The Huthis quickly denied any intention of threatening Mecca. Military spokesman Yahya Saree stated early Wednesday that their operations were directed exclusively at Saudi oil facilities and military bases located far away from the holy sites. However, escalating attacks and rapid advances by the rebel group in recent weeks have increased pressure on Saudi Arabia amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict.

Mecca holds profound religious significance as the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad and the destination for millions of Muslim pilgrims each year. Al-Maliki strongly condemned the incident in a post on X, calling it a deliberate act designed to provoke millions of Muslims and vowing necessary deterrent measures against the militants.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) also issued a condemnation, stating that the attempted strikes violated the sanctity of holy sites and instilled fear in civilians. Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif denounced the act as heinous while affirming his country's support for Saudi Arabia.

These developments unfold amid a broader escalation in fighting, which includes Huthi missile and drone strikes on cities such as Khamis Mushait, Abha, and Taif that injured 13 civilians. In response, Saudi forces have launched retaliatory airstrikes across Huthi-held areas in Yemen, as regional tensions and concerns over Red Sea shipping lanes continue to mount.
