An already-strong El Niño has officially reached super status as the climate phenomenon crosses into uncharted territory. Strengthening at a rapid pace since its declaration in June, the natural climate cycle is currently stronger than it has ever been on this date and continues to grow.

Forecasters from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) track this strength using the Niño 3.4 Relative Oceanic Niño Index, or RONI, which measures sea surface temperatures above normal in the Pacific Ocean. Recently, the weekly RONI value hit 2.0 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above average, crossing the threshold for the "very strong" category and earning its unofficial "super" moniker.

This abnormal event is projected to become stronger than any recorded prior to 1950, amplified further by global climate change and fossil fuel pollution. The warming waters trigger atmospheric shifts that have a domino effect on global weather, influencing events such as Indonesia's severe wildfires, an active Pacific hurricane season impacting Hawaii, and a quieter Atlantic hurricane season.

As El Niño approaches its winter peak—typically the period when its global influence is most pronounced—it is expected to heavily dictate winter weather conditions while continuing to raise global average air temperatures.
