Israel and Morocco have agreed to upgrade their diplomatic ties, elevating their respective missions to full embassies and appointing ambassadors to both countries. The historic meeting between the two nations' foreign ministers was hosted by the United States ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, in New York on Wednesday.
During the gathering, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita also agreed to advance economic and trade relations. This includes completing two key agreements by the end of this year focused on investment protection and preventing double taxation.
"[The] establishment of full diplomatic, peaceful and friendly relations between Morocco and Israel is in the common interest of both countries and will advance the cause of peace," the US mission to the UN stated in a joint declaration on behalf of all three participating nations.
Furthermore, both sides agreed to expand air travel by reinstating direct flights operated by carriers from both nations. They also confirmed concrete plans for high-level bilateral visits in the upcoming months.
This major announcement arrives just a day after the sixth anniversary of the Abraham Accords, an initiative spearheaded by US President Donald Trump during his initial term in office. The diplomatic framework has previously seen the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, Sudan, and Kazakhstan join in efforts to normalise relations between Arab and Muslim-majority countries and Israel.
