Indigenous authorities in the United States have confirmed that three individuals have died following severe flooding in the southwestern state of New Mexico, where torrential downpours left numerous roadways impassable.

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren announced on Wednesday that local police responded to emergency calls regarding individuals swept away by raging floodwaters at 12:30am (06:30 GMT) near the community of Newcomb in northwestern New Mexico.

Confirming the deaths of two adults and a child, Nygren extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved community and strongly advised all residents to exercise extreme caution in areas affected by the relentless rainfall.

“There are no words that can ease the pain of losing a loved one so suddenly, and our hearts are especially heavy knowing that three lives were lost,” Nygren stated.

“To the family, relatives, and loved ones who are grieving today, we offer our deepest condolences. We pray that you are surrounded by strength, comfort, and the love of your family and community in the difficult days ahead.”

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, released a special briefing on Tuesday cautioning residents about the high probability of widespread thunderstorms throughout the region.

The agency reiterated these urgent warnings on Wednesday, emphasizing that atmospheric moisture levels are projected to reach historic highs for mid-September.

“A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for the western third of New Mexico and the South Central Mountains today,” NWS Albuquerque posted on social media on Wednesday, adding that flash flooding could strike anywhere across central and northern New Mexico.

Additional heavy rainfall is forecasted to impact parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah through Thursday. Consequently, flash flood warnings remain active for areas of northwestern New Mexico, alongside widespread flash flood watches across large portions of central and northern Arizona.

These tragic fatalities follow an incident from several weeks ago when three hikers were swept away and dozens required rescue operations after severe rainfall triggered dangerous flooding at the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
