Tokyo Game Show has always been a premier destination to look ahead. Marking its 30th anniversary, the 2026 event opened at Makuhari Messe in Chiba on Thursday as its biggest iteration yet, expanding to five days for the first time with two business days followed by three public days. Organisers announced 759 exhibitors from 51 countries and regions across nearly 4,000 booths.

Major industry publishers, including Sony Interactive Entertainment, Capcom, Square Enix, Sega, Atlus, Konami, and Bandai Namco, gathered in Tokyo to showcase upcoming releases spanning the immediate future and projects shaping 2027. At the PlayStation booth, visitors experienced highly anticipated PS5 titles such as Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Marvel's Wolverine, and Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve. Meanwhile, Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 6 drew massive industry attention with a dedicated PlayStation theatre hosting an extended presentation ahead of its launch later this year.

Sega and Atlus delivered one of the busiest line-ups, offering a playable demo of Persona 4 Revival alongside Stranger Than Heaven, the return of Crazy Taxi, and a diverse portfolio stretching from Sonic to Total War: Warhammer 40,000. Remedy Entertainment presented Control Resonant ahead of its digital release on September 24 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Xbox marked its 25th anniversary by highlighting Minecraft Dungeons II and showcasing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer through partner Happinet, reflecting a broader strategy that extends beyond traditional hardware.

Although Nintendo lacked a public exhibition booth, its presence remained strong through Switch 2 titles developed by third-party publishers, with the console surpassing 23 million units sold globally. Sony navigated a complex landscape featuring formidable software alongside rising hardware pricing and evolving distribution models. Beyond major booths, the event highlighted the vibrant convention culture and a growing international footprint.

The UAE played a notable role in this global shift, with Abu Dhabi-based publisher and developer Red Dunes Games presenting nine titles, including Zozo and the Lost Dreams, Port of Jumanah, and Nightmare Circus. Pakistan also marked a strong presence through the Tech Destination Pakistan pavilion, supported by the Japan International Co-operation Agency to connect local studios with Japanese companies. Ultimately, the 2026 Tokyo Game Show highlighted an evolving industry defined by cross-platform accessibility and emerging global markets.
