US President Donald Trump stated that the United States is moving toward the conclusion of its conflict with Iran, asserting that he has engaged in direct communications with officials in Tehran. This claim opens the possibility of renewed diplomacy, even as fighting spreads to Yemen and global energy supplies face mounting pressure from an Iran-imposed blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite President Donald Trump's remarks, Tehran has not confirmed that direct negotiations have resumed. Just a day prior, Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, publicly rejected talks unless specific conditions were met, demanding that the US honor the terms of a deal signed in June.

The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz—a crucial shipping lane carrying a fifth of global oil and gas—has driven oil prices above $100 per barrel amid ongoing clashes and damage to Saudi oil installations by Iran-linked Houthis. When asked by reporters about the war, President Donald Trump remarked that they are hopefully toward the end of the conflict and that Iran wants to make a deal.

While President Donald Trump maintained he spoke with the Iranian side directly, previous negotiations have primarily relied on intermediaries such as Qatar, Oman, and Pakistan. Diplomatic channels remain active through other figures as well; Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently held a telephone call with Pakistani army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir from Beijing to discuss regional developments.

During his visit to Beijing, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who urged both the US and Iran to exercise restraint and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Chinese President Xi Jinping additionally expressed Beijing's willingness to support peace efforts during the BRICS summit in New Delhi.

Amid these developments, US officials recently met with representatives of Yemen’s Houthi movement at the US embassy in Muscat, with assistance from Oman. The Houthis indicated they remain committed to their 2025 ceasefire with Washington and do not intend to target American vessels, though regional tensions persist as maritime routes face disruptions.
