The UAE has officially approved the use of a new drug, Rinvok, specifically designed for the treatment of non-segmental vitiligo in individuals aged over 12.

Announced by the Emirates Drug Authority on Monday, this milestone makes the UAE the first country in the world to adopt the medication for this condition. Vitiligo is a disorder that causes the skin to lose its pigment cells, resulting in discoloured patches on various parts of the body.

While there is currently no cure for the condition—which affects between 0.5 and 1 per cent of the global population—the approval marks a significant step forward. Notably, a Dubai resident with vitiligo was recently crowned Miss Universe Egypt 2024.

"The UAE is the first country in the world to adopt the expanded use of Rinvok, reflecting its advanced position in keeping pace with the latest pharmaceutical innovations and accelerating their availability," the Emirates Drug Authority stated. The authority added that the accreditation is part of an advanced regulatory system responding to global scientific developments to improve treatment outcomes for patients.
