Qatar has finalized its preparations for high-level participation in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) next week, bringing its core diplomatic priorities to New York amid heightened regional tensions and evolving questions surrounding the international order.
Majed Al Ansari, adviser to the Prime Minister and official spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), announced on Thursday that all arrangements are complete for Qatar's delegation at the 81st session of the UNGA. Al Ansari noted that the assembly arrives during a particularly sensitive international climate, shaped by ongoing regional tensions that have persisted since February.
The delegation's agenda will center on international peace and security, dialogue and mediation, adherence to international law and the UN Charter, humanitarian initiatives, sustainable development, and reinforcing confidence in multilateral institutions. Qatari officials are also slated to engage in numerous bilateral and multilateral discussions with global counterparts and international organizations on the sidelines of the summit.
While these themes mirror Qatar's historical focuses at past UN gatherings, they unfold against a significantly altered regional landscape this year.
The General Debate of the 81st UNGA kicks off on September 22, drawing leaders and senior officials worldwide to the UN headquarters in New York. The Assembly unites all 193 UN member states, providing a vital platform for each nation to outline its stance on global affairs and priorities for the upcoming year.
Operating under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all,” this year's debate highlights one of the busiest periods on the international diplomatic calendar, featuring high-stakes dialogues on conflicts, humanitarian emergencies, and development challenges.
For Doha, the General Assembly remains a cornerstone of its foreign policy calendar. During UNGA 79 in 2024, Qatar's presence coincided with intensive efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza. At that time, Qatar's Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani reaffirmed the nation's commitment to mediation to halt the conflict, supported by a delegation that included Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
By UNGA 80 in September 2025, Gaza and regional security remained focal points, albeit under starkly different conditions. Sheikh Tamim addressed the General Assembly just two weeks after the September 9 Israeli attack on Doha, which targeted members of Hamas’ negotiating delegation during active mediation efforts. The incident shaped his address, alongside broader critiques of an international system shifting toward the “logic of power.” He urged the UN collective security framework to restore its efficacy while championing international law and state sovereignty, addressing crises in Gaza, the Palestinian territories, Sudan, Syria, and Lebanon.
Beyond the podium, Qatar's UNGA 80 itinerary included critical diplomatic engagements, such as talks addressing the conflict in eastern Congo, reflecting ongoing mediation efforts between Congo and Rwanda.
As Qatar returns to New York for UNGA 81, Al Ansari emphasized that the nation will continue to champion dialogue and mediation as primary tools for dispute resolution, alongside defending state sovereignty and the tenets of the UN Charter. The delegation will leverage the week-long event to fortify bilateral partnerships and coordinate responses to political, humanitarian, and development challenges.
Entering UNGA 81 with enduring foreign policy goals, Qatar navigates an international environment transformed since the previous gathering. The shifts in regional security observed since February will heavily influence Qatar's participation, emphasizing mediation and the crucial role of international institutions during times of conflict.
Through both Al Ansari's statements and the legacy of the Amir’s address at the 80th session, Doha continues to advocate for international law and sustainable peace, utilizing both public platforms and behind-the-scenes diplomacy to navigate a period of global uncertainty.
