South African Police Service members and state pathologists have inspected the body of a woman found dumped on the side of a road on the outskirts of Johannesburg, South Africa. Police discovered the body of another murdered woman near the commercial capital following the discovery of eight female corpses in the same area of Johannesburg over the past two months.
Authorities announced the discovery of the ninth victim and imposed a lockdown in Kempton Park within the Ekurhuleni municipality. Three of the partially naked bodies were uncovered in the region during the week. This string of murders has heightened public anxiety regarding a potential serial killer operating in the area.
Police previously noted that similarities in the deaths of the first eight victims warranted a public warning. Fred Kekana, the police commissioner for South Africa’s Gauteng province, stated that investigators are evaluating all potential scenarios, including multiple suspects or separate perpetrators.
The first five bodies were discovered in or near Kempton Park, while the others were found between 25km and 35km away in separate locations. Investigators are currently comparing evidence, timelines, locations, victim profiles, and case circumstances, noting that striking similarities remain a primary concern.
All victims were women in their 20s or 30s, found either naked or partially clothed with similar bruising. The initial body was discovered on July 17, naked and restrained with cable ties. A suspect identified as the victim's boyfriend was taken into custody, though formal charges were not filed.
One victim was identified as 38-year-old Elizabeth Tsontso Moselakgomo, who vanished while out jogging after her eight-year-old daughter alerted family members. Another body was found naked in an advanced stage of decomposition, and the youngest victim was a 20-year-old woman.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa vowed that no stone will be left unturned in the investigation, and authorities have issued a 400,000 South African rand reward for information leading to an arrest. Women in the vicinity have been advised to remain extremely cautious.
Tebello Mosikili, deputy national commissioner for policing in the South African Police Service, emphasized the severity of the situation to journalists at the scene. The ongoing killings have drawn attention to South Africa's high rates of gender-based violence and femicide, with official statistics recording thousands of sexual offenses and high rates of physical and sexual violence nationwide.
