Anthony James Kazmierczak, 55, was sentenced to a 14-month prison term after pleading guilty to assaulting Democratic United States Representative Ilhan Omar during a town hall meeting in Minneapolis. Appearing before District Judge Joan N Ericksen, Kazmierczak admitted to planning the January 27 assault, driven by opposing political views.

The incident occurred when Kazmierczak leaped from the front row and sprayed a water-and-vinegar mixture from a syringe, which landed on Omar's clothing and skin. The congresswoman's security team quickly subdued the attacker, and Omar was unharmed, continuing with the town hall event. The attack followed Omar's calls for the abolition of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency and the resignation of then-Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem amid civil unrest tied to federal immigration enforcement.

Prosecutors submitted evidence that the assault was premeditated, noting text messages sent prior to the incident. Defense attorney John Fossum pointed to Kazmierczak's struggles with alcohol abuse, mental health concerns, and a 2022 Parkinson's disease diagnosis, stating that his client had not been taking his medication at the time. In court, Kazmierczak apologized to Omar, stating he had spent time reflecting while in jail.

US Attorney Daniel N Rosen condemned the act, highlighting it as part of a troubling trend of political hatred manifesting as criminal behavior. Representative Ilhan Omar, a Somali-American refugee and naturalised US citizen, has frequently been the target of anti-immigrant rhetoric throughout her tenure in Congress.
