During a United Nations Security Council monthly meeting focused on Syria’s post-Assad transition in New York City, representatives from Syria, Israel, and Turkiye clashed over military presence on Syrian soil.
Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ibrahim Olabi, informed council members that Israeli aggression constitutes the most significant threat to regional stability. He cited actions such as village incursions, displacement of people, and bombings of facilities, alongside an emergency declaration by 44 nations outside the chamber condemning an unlawful visit by Israeli leadership to Jabal al-Sheikh on September 9.
In response, Permanent Representative of Israel to the UN Danny Danon defended Israel’s actions and redirected attention toward Turkiye, warning that Ankara intends to expand its military footprint and control significant portions of Syrian territory.
Defending its position, Turkish Ambassador to the UN Ahmet Yildiz stated that Turkish forces operate in Syria at the invitation of Damascus, while criticizing Israel for undermining stability through reckless attacks and demanding an immediate withdrawal.
