Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has stated that the time has arrived to put the "Mecca Agreement" into action, responding to rising tensions and Houthi attacks directed at the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Speaking to the local Pakistani channel Geo News, Asif underscored his nation's dedication to Saudi Arabia's security and the defense of holy sites, emphasizing that Pakistan views this as a binding duty rather than something requiring a formal treaty.

Asif noted that Pakistan will persist with diplomatic initiatives to manage the escalation and stop the conflict from expanding to new areas, highlighting the necessity of regional stability. The Pakistani Defense Minister also disclosed that his country delivered a message from Saudi Arabia to Iran, outlining mounting worries over the strikes conducted by the Houthi group.

The Mecca Joint Defense Agreement serves as a collective defense pact established in August 2026 by Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey, creating a mutual defense framework where an assault on one member is treated as an assault on all. Building on a previous 2025 bilateral defense arrangement between Riyadh and Islamabad, the pact seeks to strengthen regional security collaboration and deter foreign aggression against the signatories and their holy sites.

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia maintain strong defense and security connections, with Islamabad traditionally committing to defend the territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the Islamic holy sites in Mecca and Medina from outside dangers. Furthermore, Pakistan has frequently served as a diplomatic intermediary between Saudi Arabia and Iran to ease regional tensions and reduce proxy conflicts in the Arabian Peninsula.

Tensions have grown sharply over recent days following multiple long-range drone and missile launches from Yemen aimed at the western region of Saudi Arabia. These intercepted attacks near the Holy City triggered intense international concern and widespread condemnation throughout the Islamic world regarding the safety of Mecca's sacred locations.
