Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat has confirmed that Egypt is advancing its efforts to expand battery energy storage plants, which have been successfully integrated into the national electricity grid over the past two years. Speaking on Sunday, August 16, 2026, during a meeting with a delegation from the Renergy Group consortium, Esmat highlighted ongoing work on a major pumped-storage hydropower project in the Al-Tor area of South Sinai.
The delegation included representatives from Renergy Group Partners, the lead developer; Green Tech Egypt, the local technical partner; and OAK Holdings, the financial and investment partner. The meeting was headed by Renergy Group founder Robert Falk and Madkour Group Chairman Mustafa Madkour.
Esmat emphasized that the ministry's strategic framework relies heavily on expanding renewable energy projects, reducing fossil fuel dependence, and leveraging Egypt’s unique geographic advantages for pumped-storage applications. The ambitious 3,100-megawatt project will be implemented in two phases, incorporating both solar power plants and pumped-storage hydropower facilities to enhance energy security, sustainability, and grid stability across the unified network.
