President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the United States has reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland establishing "permanent control" over the island's security.
Writing on Truth Social, he stated that the "infinite life agreement" comes at "no cost" to US taxpayers and described it as "very important, historic, and special."
"At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America," the President wrote.
According to Mr Trump, the accord ensures that "no US adversary can EVER have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval."
The Danish government released a statement confirming that the US and Denmark will officially sign the agreement next week during the UN General Assembly.
"It is gratifying that we are about to enter into an agreement that ensures and strengthens the security of Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, the United States and the Western Alliance," remarked Jens-Frederik Nielsen, chairman of the Greenland government. "The agreement recognises Greenland's interests and our place in international co-operation. It is for the benefit of us all."
The statement noted that following the signing, the agreement will undergo parliamentary procedures for formal enactment.
Highlighting the strategic value of the territory, Mr Trump stated, "For over 100 years, Presidents have known the strategic importance of Greenland, but NONE of them were able to do anything about it. I am proud to be the President that permanently and conclusively addressed this very important situation."
He further announced that the US would "immediately" commence building a substantial military presence on the island.
Since returning to office last year, Mr Trump has frequently emphasized the strategic significance of Greenland to US national security and highlighted its abundant natural resources. His earlier warnings regarding the territory drew criticism from European allies, including remarks in January where he refused to rule out potential military action to acquire the island of 57,000 people.
