Thousands of demonstrators formed a human chain around the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC to contest its closure, amid fears that United States President Donald Trump could proceed with threats to demolish the historic landmark.
The crowd filled the streets in the Foggy Bottom neighbourhood on Friday evening, bringing traffic to a standstill for the “Hands Around the Kennedy Center” protest. Participants carried signs and wore costumes, with boos erupting whenever President Donald Trump was mentioned during the event.
The protest follows a vote by the Trump-installed board to close the venue for repairs lasting up to two years. The decision came shortly after District Judge Christopher Cooper blocked the board's latest attempt to add President Donald Trump's name to the building.
Chris Raleigh, co-founder of the organising group Hands Off the Arts, stated that the strong turnout demonstrates public opposition to President Donald Trump's plans for the facility. Meanwhile, a federal judge has ordered the Kennedy Center to provide 30 days’ notice prior to executing any major structural alterations or demolition.
