President Donald Trump announced that the United States has reached a landmark agreement with Denmark and Greenland, securing permanent control over the strategic island's security and defense needs. The deal comes months after the president previously threatened to forcibly annex the self-governing territory, a move that had sparked significant concern among NATO allies.
Writing on Truth Social, President Donald Trump described the pact as an "Infinite Life Agreement" that resolves U.S. security concerns at zero financial cost to the nation. While the official text is set to be released soon, the announcement establishes that Greenland remains under Danish sovereignty while granting the U.S. expanded military and strategic rights.
"From now on, no U.S. adversary can EVER have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval," President Donald Trump stated. He added that the U.S. will immediately expand its military presence and work alongside local residents on infrastructure development. The U.S. has operated the Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland since the Defense of Greenland Treaty was signed in 1951.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen confirmed the upcoming signing at the UN General Assembly alongside representatives from the United States and Greenland. She emphasized that the pact respects the sovereignty of the Kingdom and the self-determination of the Greenlandic people while benefiting the wider NATO alliance. Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen echoed these sentiments, noting that the agreement protects local interests within the framework of international cooperation.
A senior U.S. official confirmed that the arrangement includes permanent access, basing, and overflight rights, effectively blocking adversaries like Russia and China from establishing military footprints or sensitive investments on the island. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also praised the pact, stating it permanently addresses national security priorities in the region following months of diplomatic efforts and high-level working groups involving Vice President JD Vance and Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
