A man was hospitalized in serious but stable condition after being shot in the torso by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer on the north side of Austin, Texas, according to local authorities. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis stated during a news conference alongside the local mayor and other city officials that Austin police officers were not involved in the operation or the shooting, which followed a traffic stop on Sunday afternoon. The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, did not participate in the press briefing and did not immediately respond to requests for details, as reported by the Associated Press news agency.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson, a Democrat, expressed his desire for the city’s police department to participate in the investigation to provide "clear, third-party eyes." Watson noted that it would be inappropriate for ICE to investigate itself, emphasizing that Austin residents have a right to feel safe and that a proper investigation will enhance credibility. When asked if authorities knew the whereabouts of the federal agent involved—noting that agents have previously left states after nationwide shootings—Mayor Watson replied that they did not know, though he hopes the agent remains in the city and state. Police Chief Davis stated that the nationality of the injured man remains unknown and that her department's special investigation unit was deployed to the scene.
Following the incident, a large law enforcement presence was established alongside a crowd of approximately 100 protesters. Demonstrators expressed anger, with some cursing at police officers holding riot shields and others shouting while passing cars honked in support. One protester carried a sign bearing the phrases "Nobody is safe" and "ICE Nazi." US Representative Greg Casar, a Democrat representing parts of Austin, demanded transparency during the investigation, telling reporters that it is awful this horror has come to their doorstep and that ICE should end its surge in Austin to ensure safety.
The shooting occurs amidst a broader nationwide enforcement surge by ICE over the summer, which resulted in more than 50,000 arrests per month in July and August for the first time in the agency's history. This follows a previous incident in July where an ICE officer fatally shot 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo of Houston after federal agents in unmarked vehicles pursued him while he was transporting his construction crew to a job site.
