The Palestinian film “Thirteen in Gaza” (2026), directed by Hosam Abu Dan, has won the prestigious NETPAC Award at the conclusion of the 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
In its official statement, the NETPAC jury praised the feature for moving past suffering as a mere spectacle or victimhood, instead creating captivating imagery that delivers a complete depiction of life in Gaza. The jury characterized the production as a bold and intimate work signaling the arrival of a remarkable new cinematic voice.
Authored by Khalil Al-Mozian, “Thirteen in Gaza” illustrates a deeply human narrative focusing on a father and his teenage daughter as they navigate the challenges of daily survival inside a refugee camp situated in the Gaza Strip. The film features a cast that includes Nawaf Abu Amra, Feras Al Masri, Ghassan Salem, and Mary Ziyara.
Presented by the Network for the Promotion of Asia Pacific Cinema, the NETPAC Award honors exceptional cinematic achievements originating from the Asia and Pacific region. The three-member jury, selected collaboratively by TIFF and NETPAC, honors the premier Asian feature film produced by a first- or second-time director. The 2026 NETPAC jury was led by chair Mara Matta, working alongside fellow jurors Richard Fung and Panos Kotzathanasis.
