Israeli forces have detained at least 53 Palestinians during an extensive military operation in the town of Biddu, located northwest of Jerusalem in the occupied West Bank.
The early Monday raid marks the third incursion into the area following the arrest of a Palestinian man from the town who is suspected of shooting and killing an Israeli settler on Sunday. According to the Israeli military, a gunman opened fire at vehicles near Halamish, an illegal settlement west of Ramallah in the central West Bank. The suspect was shot, wounded, and subsequently arrested during a military raid at a hospital in Ramallah.
The Jerusalem Governorate reported that Israeli forces continue to hold at least 53 young men in an interrogation center established inside a seized residential building in Biddu. Biddu Mayor Nazmi Mansour told Al Jazeera that troops have occupied the town since the previous day, converting several homes into detention centers and shutting down local offices, shops, and educational institutions.
"The occupation forces have abused and assaulted a number of citizens during the ongoing raids and searches. Residents are staying in their homes, and a state of fear and anticipation prevails in the town," Mansour stated.
Al Jazeera’s Nida Ibrahim, reporting from Ramallah, noted that the campaign serves as a collective message to the local population. Palestinians in Biddu report that the ongoing operations and field interrogations are intended to signal that the entire vicinity will face severe consequences for attacks against Israelis.
Military and settler violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank has grown steadily since the escalation of the conflict in October 2023, intensifying significantly over the past year. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) recorded more than 1,330 settler-related attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank between January and late July, marking the fastest pace in approximately two decades.
Ibrahim added that the intensification of these measures also coincides with the approach of the Israeli election on October 27, noting that crackdowns on Palestinians often feature in political lobbying efforts.
