Economic interdependence between Iran and its Gulf neighbours could establish a lasting foundation for regional security, according to Majed Al Ansari, adviser to Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman, speaking in New York on Monday.

Addressing the Concordia Annual Summit ahead of the UN General Assembly's high-level debate, Mr Al Ansari presented a post-conflict vision where integrated economic interests and security guarantees minimize the danger of future military escalation. Stressing geographic reality, Mr Al Ansari, who also serves as spokesman for Qatar's Foreign Ministry, noted that the population of the Gulf must coexist with 90 million Iranians regardless of how Iran is governed, necessitating a sustainable diplomatic resolution and regional dialogue.

He emphasized that any such framework requires robust security guarantees to prevent Gulf nations from being targeted in future conflicts involving Tehran. Highlighting the current isolation of regional markets, Mr Al Ansari stated that greater economic ties would alter the regional dynamic by ensuring that communities on both sides of the Gulf share a mutual stake in stability and prosperity.

The statements coincided with the arrival of world leaders and senior officials in New York for the UN General Assembly's high-level week, where Middle East security and Iran are expected to dominate diplomatic talks. Reinforcing this perspective on Sunday, Dr Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to President Sheikh Mohamed, advocated for a “new mindset” in regional relations, asserting that future planning must involve direct dialogue between Tehran and Arab states alongside US-Iran talks, as US President Donald Trump prepares to meet with officials from Gulf nations, Iraq, and Jordan.
