Head of the United Russia party Dmitry Medvedev, center, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, center right, joined party members to watch preliminary voting results on Sunday. The outcome of Russia's tightly controlled parliamentary election was never in serious doubt, resulting in a resounding win for the ruling United Russia party, which fervently backs President Vladimir Putin and Russia’s war in Ukraine.

With genuine political opposition effectively silenced, the ballot—the first since 2021—was entirely predictable. The only remaining opposition party calling for an end to the war, Yabloko, was barred from participating. President Vladimir Putin had previously stated that the election would showcase national unity and demonstrate that millions back the fighters.

While the election outcome was certain, what remains unclear is how the Kremlin will utilize this fresh political support. The nationwide vote across 11 time zones and annexed regions was used to project normalcy amid escalating conflict, rising casualties, and economic hardship. However, fears persist that the Kremlin may use its claimed mandate to ramp up military efforts, tighten domestic controls, or trigger further mobilization, despite President Vladimir Putin previously dismissing rumors of a general call-up as complete nonsense.
