Palestinian artists have paid tribute to Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds by painting a striking mural on the ruins of a destroyed building in Gaza city. Created on a structure damaged during Israeli attacks, the artwork features a portrait of the American singer alongside a Palestinian flag as a gesture of gratitude for his vocal support for Palestinians.
The mural draws inspiration from an incident at an Imagine Dragons concert in Milan on May 27 last year, during which Reynolds was handed a Palestinian flag near the end of the performance. He held the flag aloft, wrapped it around his shoulders, and kissed it, with the moment subsequently captured on video and widely shared online.
Among the creators behind the artwork is Palestinian artist Anne Ridvan, 26, who has utilized buildings damaged in Israeli attacks as canvasses for her work. Ridvan, an artist prior to the war, lost her tools and materials during the conflict and began painting directly on compromised structures to inject color into destroyed streets and communicate messages to the outside world.
"We wanted to say a simple thank you from Gaza and from the heart of the destruction to Dan Reynolds because he showed his solidarity to us and raised the Palestinian flag," Ridvan told the Anadolu Agency. Describing the ongoing challenges, she noted the difficulty in securing materials like colors and brushes, as well as finding safe spaces to work amid the constant threat of strikes during the ongoing siege.
Earlier this month, Ridvan also painted a mural honoring rapper Macklemore after he was removed from Ed Sheeran's tour for calling for a "Free Palestine". The Reynolds artwork appears just months before the singer is scheduled to return to the UAE with Imagine Dragons as a headliner for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after-race concerts at Etihad Park on December 5, marking the band's first performance in the UAE since their sold-out show at Abu Dhabi's Etihad Arena in 2023.
Formed in Las Vegas in 2008, Imagine Dragons gained international fame with their 2012 debut album Night Visions, evolving into one of the world's leading pop-rock bands with major hits including Radioactive, Demons, Believer, and Thunder.
Reynolds' display of the Palestinian flag in Milan also drew significant attention given the band's previous decision to perform in Israel. Imagine Dragons played before a crowd of roughly 60,000 people at Yarkon Park in Tel Aviv in August 2023, resisting calls from pro-Palestinian campaigners to cancel the show. Reynolds later addressed the criticism in a 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, explaining that the band believed audiences should not be barred from seeing them perform due to the actions of their government.
