The UAE is heading to the UN General Assembly with a clear focus on advancing multilateral priorities, which include conflict resolution through dialogue, de-escalation, and strict adherence to international law, according to the country's UN ambassador. Mohamed Abushahab shared with The National ahead of the annual gathering of world leaders in New York that the nation's delegation will also center its efforts on cooperation regarding UN reform, artificial intelligence, climate action, and sustainable water solutions.
“Despite everything that is happening in the region, we are coming ready to work and ready to advance and play our part in supporting stability, supporting peace and security, advancing tolerance and peaceful co-existence, and looking at a UN that needs to be reformed,” Mr Abushahab stated.
Addressing global conflicts, he acknowledged the frequent paralysis within the UN Security Council, but emphasized that the assembly of world leaders in New York presents a vital opportunity for high-level diplomacy to reduce tensions across multiple issues. Mr Abushahab noted that the UAE is particularly concerned with safeguarding international supply chains, energy, and trade amid disruptions to the global economy caused by the Iran war. He also highlighted ongoing conflicts in Sudan and Gaza, stressing that there is no military solution in Sudan and advocating for an urgent, unconditional humanitarian truce leading to a permanent ceasefire.
Shifting focus beyond regional conflicts, the UAE will utilize the General Assembly to build momentum for the 2026 UN Water Conference, which it will co-host alongside Senegal in Abu Dhabi this December. The delegation plans to encourage countries to raise their ambitions and foster international cooperation, supported by the release of the UAE-produced report titled "Crosscurrents," which examines AI's water demands alongside innovative sector solutions.
Artificial intelligence will also take center stage, with the UAE advocating for wider access to the technology, bridging the digital divide, and ensuring developing countries can benefit safely and responsibly. Furthermore, the UAE is pushing for comprehensive UN reforms to enhance the institution's effectiveness in preventing and resolving conflicts, while maintaining a strong interest in the selection process for the next secretary general.
