Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva used his address at the 81st United Nations General Assembly at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to deliver a staunch defense of the country's sovereignty, warning strongly against any attempts to interfere in Brazil's upcoming election amid rising tensions with the United States.

Speaking on Tuesday, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated that Brazil would prevent both domestic and foreign actors from undermining the October 4 vote, in which he is seeking a fourth non-consecutive term. Emphasizing that Brazilian democracy belongs strictly to Brazilians, he asserted that the nation will remain sovereign. Although Donald Trump was not mentioned by name, the warnings followed clear references to the increasingly strained relationship between Brazil and the administration of US President Donald Trump.

Earlier in the address, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva pointed to a resurgence of hegemonic ambitions and foreign election interference across Latin America. Declaring that Brazil does not belong in anyone's backyard, he dismissed attempts to divide the globe into spheres of influence as anachronistic. These remarks arrived in the wake of accusations that the administration of US President Donald Trump attempted to sway the Brazilian election through economic measures, including two new rounds of tariffs on Brazilian goods imposed in July. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated his intention to directly tell Donald Trump—an ally of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's main rival Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, who is the son of former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro—to stay out of the electoral process. While trade talks continue, Brazil has temporarily withheld retaliation, though Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva noted that the reciprocity law could still be invoked if negotiations fail.

Shifting focus beyond bilateral ties, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva delivered a sweeping critique of the international framework, telling global leaders that the United Nations is facing its most critical juncture since his initial address to the General Assembly in 2003. Expressing deep indignation, he argued that the United Nations is failing to stop wars and that its credibility has hit a historic low, largely blaming this paralysis on the United Nations Security Council and its veto-holding powers. He further urged regional unity, emphasizing that Brazil will handle its own border defense and organized crime efforts through international cooperation rather than foreign military presence, stating that the nation needs collaboration against illicit money and weapons rather than aircraft carriers.
