Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, used his address at the 81st United Nations General Assembly to call for diplomatic solutions to regional crises, strongly condemn Israel’s attacks and violations in Gaza, and reaffirm Doha’s ongoing mediation and humanitarian efforts.
In his opening remarks, Sheikh Tamim emphasized that the global economy should not be exploited as a tool for political pressure, warning that such crises drive up the costs of food and medicine for people unconnected to the root causes of conflicts. Addressing the Gulf crisis, he maintained that diplomacy remains the key to resolution, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz to navigation and returning to negotiations to avert war.
Turning his focus to Gaza, Sheikh Tamim stated that a just international order is impossible while Palestine remains a blind spot. He characterized the events in Gaza as a "genocide in every sense of the word" and a "stain of shame on the brow of humanity," warning that future generations will look back with astonishment at the vast gap between the catastrophe and the international response.
Sheikh Tamim also dismissed attempts to label international opposition to Israel's violations as antisemitism or conspiracy theories, noting that Israeli soldiers have openly broadcast their actions and young people worldwide have circulated evidence of crimes against humanity. He reaffirmed that Qatar will continue its mediation efforts to stop the bloodshed, alleviate civilian suffering, and secure the release of prisoners until a lasting ceasefire is achieved, while calling on Israel to fulfill its commitments.
Furthermore, the Amir outlined Qatar's positions on other regional conflicts, expressing support for state institutions, sovereignty, and political dialogue in Syria, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Lebanon, and Yemen. He concluded by stressing that peaceful coexistence and dialogue are the only viable paths forward for the region.
