Despite decades of peace agreements and ceasefires, armed groups in Ethiopia continue to clash with one another and the military. In a new development, several former rivals have established an alliance aimed at removing the government in Addis Ababa. The coalition warns that Ethiopia stands on the precipice of disintegration, placing the blame squarely on Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
While Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed maintains that the country possesses the capability to defend itself, ordinary citizens are increasingly fearful of an impending civil war. This panel discussion examines whether these former rivals, divided by deep political and ideological differences, can successfully realize their shared goal. The discussion is led by presenter Rob Matheson, alongside expert guests Samuel Getachew, a political commentator specializing in Ethiopian affairs; Ngala Chome, a Horn of Africa analyst; and Kjetil Tronvoll, a professor of peace and conflict studies at Oslo New University College.
