In a rare move, US Senator John Curtis, a Republican from the state of Utah, has called for a congressional investigation into the foreign business dealings of Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of the president.

Speaking on Tuesday, Senator Curtis stated that questions have arisen regarding Donald Trump Jr.'s relationships with foreign business figures and his acceptance of significant gifts, alleging potential personal benefit from his ties to the president. In a letter addressed to the Republican and Democratic leaders of the US Senate Judiciary Committee, Curtis cited a ProPublica report revealing that Trump Jr.'s Bahamian wedding party in May was funded by a Russian oligarch.

“These reports raise legitimate questions about foreign access to members of a sitting president’s family and whether such relationships can create actual or perceived expectations of favorable treatment,” Curtis wrote in the letter, warning of potential national security vulnerabilities.

The push for an inquiry comes as a growing number of Republicans begin to voice concerns amid record-low approval ratings driven by the war in Iran and domestic living costs. A spokesperson for the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmed receipt of the letter but did not comment on whether an investigation would take place.

Senator Curtis also called on the panel to subpoena Donald Trump Jr. alongside Hunter Biden, the son of former US President Joe Biden. In response to the letter, Hunter Biden took to social media to welcome the scrutiny, calling on the committee to issue subpoenas for Eric Trump and Jared Kushner as well.

Following the initial ProPublica report, Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson released a joint statement describing the Russian oligarch, Umar Kremlev, as a dear friend who hosted the celebration. President Trump stated that his son had subsequently reimbursed Kremlev for the expenses.

US Senator Dick Durbin, the ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee, announced he would support Senator Curtis's request for an inquiry, emphasizing that Donald Trump Jr. has not yet given a sworn deposition to Congress.
